St Peter's Church "E News", Friday 5th February
Dear Member of St Peter's
The Gospel Reading for this Sunday is the beautiful and mysterious first fourteen verses of St. John’s Gospel. For many years, Bill Crossly read this Gospel Reading at the Midnight Mass at St. Peter’s and it is quite a coincidence that we are reading these words on a Sunday so soon after the announcement of Bill’s death. These are beautiful and mysterious words.
I used the word mysterious because not everything about Faith can be explained and sometimes we just have to accept the mystery of God and believe. St Anselm of Canterbury wrote, “For I do not seek to understand in order that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe – that unless I believe I shall not understand.”
I believe that we need to approach this Lent as a journey of renewal. We have given up so much in the lockdown that this Lent will be a time to take up or renew good things that perhaps have been pushed aside – finding space to pray or just be still in the day, for example. Renewal of good ways of living will help us prepare for the celebration at the end of Lent of the joyful mysteries of Easter.
If we gave ourselves the opportunity through prayer or contemplation each day sometimes we find ourselves mysteriously guided towards a nugget of wisdom and find “tomorrow will be a good day” (as Captain Tom said).
I will pray for you all in the week ahead.
Canon Tim Marwood (Vicar of Petersham)
Bill Crossley RIP
Bill died on the 21st January at home after a long period of ill health. Our thoughts and prayers go to Elizabeth and all Bill's family.
Bill served St Peter's and Petersham in a variety of ways over many years. Bill was perhaps best known at St Peter's through his work as Churchyard Secretary for 25 years. Unfortunately, the Covid restrictions mean that Bill's funeral will be held privately but we will find a way of honouring his memory in the future.
